Mahindra 2025 Car Sales: India’s passenger vehicle market saw a notable reshuffle in 2025. For the first time, Mahindra & Mahindra finished the year as the country’s second-largest carmaker, moving ahead of both Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors. Market leader Maruti Suzuki continued to hold the top spot, but Mahindra’s rise stands out as one of the biggest developments of the year.
Based on Vahan registration data available till December 25, 2025, Mahindra recorded around 5.81 lakh passenger vehicle registrations, marking a sharp jump from about 4.90 lakh units in 2024. This growth pushed the brand from fourth place last year straight to second in 2025.

How the Rankings Changed in 2025
The Indian PV market has traditionally been dominated by Maruti Suzuki at the top, followed by Hyundai and Tata Motors. That order changed in 2025.
Mahindra’s strong year means Hyundai is likely to finish fourth, a position it has not occupied for many years. Tata Motors is expected to end the year in third place, narrowly ahead of Hyundai.
In simple terms, Mahindra has been the biggest gainer among India’s 16 carmakers in 2025.
SUV-Led Strategy Pays Off

Mahindra’s rise is closely tied to one clear strategy: focusing almost entirely on SUVs. At a time when Indian buyers are increasingly shifting away from hatchbacks and sedans, Mahindra’s SUV-only portfolio aligned perfectly with market demand.
Utility vehicles now form the majority of passenger vehicle sales in India, and Mahindra has long specialised in this space. Its mix of body-on-frame and monocoque SUVs allowed it to cater to both rural buyers and urban customers.
Core Models That Drove Volumes
Consistent demand across Mahindra’s key models ensured steady monthly volumes throughout the year. Long-running nameplates continued to perform, especially outside large cities.
Mahindra 2025 Car Sales model-wise (Jan–Nov 2025)

| Model | Units Sold | Share (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio (Classic + N) | 1,61,103 | 28.03 |
| Thar (3-door + Roxx) | 1,07,326 | 18.67 |
| Bolero / Bolero Neo | 93,436 | 16.25 |
| 3XO | 90,608 | 15.76 |
| XUV700 | 80,251 | 13.96 |
| BE 6, XEV 9e | 38,841 | 6.75 |
| XUV400 | 2,764 | 0.48 |
| Marazzo | 328 | 0.05 |
| Total | 5,74,657 | 100 |
The Scorpio range remained Mahindra’s top seller, contributing over 28 percent of total volumes. The Bolero, a long-established model, continued to see strong demand in semi-urban and rural markets, helping stabilise monthly sales.
Thar’s Big Leap in 2025
One of the most important shifts within Mahindra’s portfolio was the rise of the Thar brand. Combined sales of the three-door Thar and the five-door Thar Roxx reached 1,07,326 units in 2025, a massive 55 percent year-on-year growth.
This pushed the Thar family to the second position within Mahindra’s lineup, up from fourth place last year. The newer Thar Roxx is estimated to account for roughly 65 percent of these volumes, showing strong acceptance for a more practical, family-friendly version of the lifestyle SUV.
Compact and Premium SUVs Hold Ground
The 3XO compact SUV emerged as another important contributor, with over 90,000 units sold and a 12 percent year-on-year growth. It now accounts for nearly 16 percent of Mahindra’s total sales.
The XUV700, despite a slight 4 percent decline year-on-year, still posted more than 80,000 units and retained a solid share of the portfolio. This suggests demand remains stable even as competition in the premium SUV segment intensifies.
Electric SUVs Add Incremental Growth

Mahindra’s push into electric SUVs also played a role in securing the No. 2 spot. Its born-electric models, the BE 6 and XEV 9e, together contributed 38,841 units in 2025, accounting for about 7 percent of total sales.
While this is still a small share compared to its petrol and diesel SUVs, the EV lineup added incremental volume. With the XEV 9s launched in November and deliveries yet to begin, Mahindra’s electric contribution could grow further in the coming years.
What This Means for Indian Buyers and the Industry
For Indian buyers, Mahindra’s rise reflects a broader market trend: SUVs continue to dominate demand across price points and regions. For competitors, the shift underlines how portfolio focus matters as much as brand strength.
Hyundai’s slip to fourth shows the pressure faced by manufacturers with heavier dependence on hatchbacks and sedans, while Tata’s third-place finish highlights how close the race has become at the top.
Conclusion
Mahindra’s move to second place in India’s 2025 passenger vehicle sales is the result of sustained SUV demand, strong performance from core models like the Scorpio, Thar and Bolero, and incremental gains from electric SUVs.
While Maruti Suzuki remains firmly in first place, Mahindra’s SUV-led strategy has reshaped the leaderboard—and signalled how India’s car market is evolving.
