Mahindra has begun road testing its upcoming compact SUV, the Mahindra Vision S, signalling the next phase of development for its new-generation SUV lineup. Fresh spy shots captured in India show the camouflaged test mule undergoing real-world testing, offering the clearest look yet at a model that is expected to directly rival the newly launched Tata Sierra in the midsize SUV space.

The Mahindra Vision S is part of Mahindra’s broader product strategy built around its new NU IQ modular platform, which is designed to support multiple powertrains, including internal combustion, hybrid, and electric. The company had earlier showcased the Vision S as a concept alongside other models in August, and the start of road testing indicates that the SUV is moving closer to production readiness.

Boxy Design with Rugged Cues

Spy images reveal that the Mahindra Vision S adopts a distinctly boxy silhouette, a design direction that aligns with the brand’s rugged SUV identity. The test vehicle features an upright front fascia, flat bonnet, and squared-off proportions. At the front, round headlamps are paired with a vertically slatted grille, while LED daytime running lights appear inspired by those seen on the Thar Roxx.

A radar module integrated into the lower grille strongly suggests the presence of advanced driver assistance systems. Other visible elements include rectangular fog lamps, pronounced wheel arches, and large alloy wheels wrapped in high-profile tyres. Together, these indicate a focus on ground clearance and off-road capability.

Chassis and Suspension Focus

One of the key highlights emerging from the spy shots is the SUV’s tall stance. Mahindra is expected to equip the Mahindra Vision S with a long-travel suspension setup and a 5-link rear independent suspension, a configuration aimed at improving ride comfort and stability over rough terrain. This could give the Vision S an advantage for buyers looking for a balance between everyday usability and weekend off-road capability.

At the rear, the SUV sports vertically stacked rectangular tail lamps, a flat rear windscreen, and a clean bumper design. A tailgate-mounted spare wheel reinforces the SUV’s rugged positioning and practical appeal.

Feature-Rich Cabin Expected

Interior spy shots suggest that the Mahindra Vision S will be positioned as a tech-forward offering. A panoramic sunroof has been spotted, along with a wide dashboard dominated by dual 12.3-inch screens. Physical controls remain for key functions, complemented by uniquely styled air-conditioning vents and a new three-spoke, dual-tone steering wheel.

Expected features include seat heating, hill descent control, traction control, differential lock, off-road driving modes, and a terrain management system. Higher variants are likely to offer dual-zone climate control and soft-touch materials. Notably, a flat-floor layout—uncommon for an ICE SUV—could translate into better cabin space and comfort.

Powertrain Plans

Mahindra has not officially confirmed engine options yet. However, the Mahindra Vision S is expected to debut with conventional powertrains, likely including a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine. Hybrid and fully electric versions may follow at a later stage, aligning with Mahindra’s long-term electrification roadmap.

With testing now underway, the Mahindra Vision S is shaping up as a key contender against the Tata Sierra, offering buyers another rugged yet modern SUV option. More clarity on specifications, timelines, and positioning is expected as Mahindra continues its testing programme in the coming months.
