Petrol Tata Harrier and Safari: Just days after Mahindra introduced the updated XUV 7XO, Tata Motors has responded by announcing prices for the petrol-powered versions of the Tata Harrier and Tata Safari. With aggressive pricing, both SUVs now undercut their closest rival, the Mahindra XUV 7XO, intensifying competition in the midsize and three-row SUV segments.

Petrol Tata Harrier and Safari- Prices and Variant Spread

The petrol-powered Tata Harrier starts at Rs 12.89 lakh (ex-showroom) and goes up to Rs 24.69 lakh for the fully loaded Red Dark edition. The Safari petrol range begins at Rs 13.29 lakh (ex-showroom), making it one of the most accessible petrol-powered three-row SUVs in its class.
On the Harrier, the new petrol engine is offered across a wide spread of trims, including Smart, Pure X, Adventure X, Adventure X Plus, Fearless X, Fearless X Plus, Fearless Ultra, and Red Dark editions. Depending on the variant, buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox.
The Safari petrol is available in an even broader lineup, spanning 10 trims, with both six- and seven-seat layouts. The standard variants top out at Rs 24.85 lakh for the Accomplished Ultra six-seater automatic, while Red Dark editions are priced between Rs 23.69 lakh and Rs 25.20 lakh (ex-showroom).
How It Stacks Up Against the XUV 7XO
Mahindra has positioned the XUV 7XO with an entry price of Rs 13.66 lakh (ex-showroom), matching the outgoing XUV700. In comparison, the petrol Harrier undercuts the Mahindra by around Rs 77,000, while the petrol Safari is cheaper by Rs 37,000 at the entry level.
At the top end, however, the tables turn. The fully loaded Harrier petrol is about Rs 1.05 lakh more expensive than the top petrol automatic variant of the XUV 7XO. Similarly, the range-topping petrol Safari commands a premium of roughly Rs 1.56 lakh over Mahindra’s equivalent offering. This means Tata holds the advantage for entry and mid variants, while Mahindra remains more competitive at the very top.
New Hyperion Petrol Engine

Both SUVs are powered by Tata’s newly developed 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine, known internally as the Hyperion unit. First seen on the new Sierra, the engine produces 168 bhp and 280 Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic sourced from Aisin.
For buyers who prefer petrol power over diesel but still want strong highway performance and refinement, this engine fills a long-standing gap in Tata’s SUV portfolio.
Features and Equipment
The Petrol Tata Harrier and Safari mirror their diesel counterparts in terms of features. Top-spec variants offer a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Dolby Atmos, a digital IRVM with integrated dual dashcam, memory ORVMs with auto reverse-dip, Level 2 ADAS, ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. Practical additions such as camera washers further enhance everyday usability.
Market Impact

With these launches, Tata has strengthened its position against rivals like the Hyundai Creta, Alcazar, MG Hector, Hector Plus, and the Mahindra XUV 7XO. By pricing the petrol Harrier and Safari competitively at the lower end, Tata is clearly targeting buyers who want feature-rich SUVs without stepping into significantly higher price brackets.
Conclusion
The introduction of Petrol Tata Harrier and Safari variants marks a strategic move by Tata Motors to broaden buyer choice and sharpen its competitive edge. While Mahindra still holds an advantage at the top of the range, Tata’s pricing and feature strategy ensure that the battle for India’s midsize SUV buyers is far from settled.
